Smallmouth Bass

Rock fishing - fishing from rocky outcrops into the sea. It can be a dangerous pastime and claims many lives each year.

After the major bug hatches are done on the Upper parts of the AuSable and Manistee Rivers, the focus shifts to the Lower parts of the AuSable River. There are great numbers of Smallmouth that swim in these beautiful and less popular waters. It’s not uncommon to have days where you catch a good number of fish. The AuSable River is known for its great hatches. Most anglers think our hatches are for catching big brown trout which is true but we also get some of these famous hatches on the lower, warmer water of the AuSable River. The most prolific is the Red Hex hatch with its very big fly.

As the season continues and transitions into the dog days of summer, the top water popper bite gets better as it gets hotter. We also have some nice lakes close to Grayling that can make for some great smallmouth fishing. My favorite is Higgins Lake. The spring spawn in the crystal clear water makes for great sight-fishing.
